“How to Winterize Your Above-Ground Pool"

If you're closing your pool for the first time and aren't familiar with the process, we hope these instructions will help guide you through it. If you have any questions along the way, don't hesitate to reach out to us.

These instructions are specifically for a tarp-style cover on traditional steel, resin, or aluminum frame above-ground or semi-inground pools (such as the Oasis style). If you have a soft-sided pool, it likely came with its own cover and instructions on how to close it—be sure to follow those guidelines instead.

Tools You'll Need:

Flathead screwdriver

Large channel lock pliers

Two people capable of lifting at least 50 lbs.

When Should You Close Your Pool?

In Hampton Roads, the typical swimming season runs from April to October. Most pool owners choose to open their pools after the pollen season and close them before the leaves start to fall. It’s a good idea to close your pool before temperatures dip below 32°F to avoid freeze damage, which can cause expensive repairs and lead to delays when you’re ready to swim again next spring.

Step-by-Step Preparation:

1.Clear the Pool:
Remove all leaves and debris from the water.

2. Balance the Water:
Adjust the pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness just as you would when opening your pool in the spring.

3. Clean the Pool:

Brush the walls to remove any buildup.

Vacuum the pool’s bottom to ensure it’s completely clean.

4. Remove the Skimmer Basket:
Clean out the skimmer basket and remove any debris.

5. Disconnect the Jet Return Eyes:
Carefully remove all the jet return eyes to prepare the pool for winter.

Closing Your Above Ground Pool

Add Winterizing Chemicals:
Use the appropriate winterizing chemicals for your water care system. We offer both Simple Salt Winter Kits and traditional winter kits. Some systems may recommend alternatives—contact us if you're unsure.

Turn Off the Power:
Switch off the filter system. Remove the return jet eye and plug it with a threaded plug. Follow the winterizing instructions for any through-the-wall lights or pre-filter skimmers.

Plug the Skimmer & Return:
Use a faceplate or expansion plug to cover the skimmer. Properly winterize the skimmer to prevent freeze damage. Plug the return jet as well.

Disconnect Equipment:
Loosen the hose clamps or unthread unions to disconnect the filter, pump, and other equipment. Remove the drain plugs from the pump and filter to empty any remaining water. Store the plugs in the pump's strainer pot to avoid losing them.

Clean & Store Filters:
If you have a Cartridge or Simple Clean filter, remove the inner element, wash it thoroughly, and let it dry. Store all equipment in a dry place, if possible, to protect it from the elements.

Inflate the Expansion Pillow:
Inflate the pillow about ¾ of the way, tie it in all four corners, and place it in the center of the pool to protect the wall from ice expansion.

Cover the Pool:
Ensure your cover is the correct size—typically 3-4 feet larger than the pool size. Lay the cover evenly around the pool like you're making a bed, and avoid letting water pool on top. Use the winch and cable to secure the cover tightly.

Secure the Cover:
Attach cover clips to each top rail (one per rail). Then, wrap the perimeter with winter cover seal (UV-protected plastic wrap) to keep the cover in place.

Check Everything:
Walk around the pool to ensure the cover is secure. Store any remaining equipment in a dry location. Use a cover drain to remove accumulated water throughout the winter.

FAQS ABOUT WINTERIZING.

  • Is My Liner Leaking? Why Is My Pool Losing Water?

It may seem like your liner has a leak, but chances are, you’re losing water because of rainwater on the cover. When rain accumulates on the pool cover, it raises the water level underneath, causing it to spill over. This is similar to how ice in a cup can make the liquid overflow. Once you drain the rainwater, the pool’s water level should be lower.

  • Why Did My Expansion Pillow Pop?

The expansion pillow is designed to absorb the force of ice to protect your pool liner. If it popped, it likely did its job and absorbed the ice’s pressure. It’s always a good idea to check your pillow for any other damage before closing the pool to ensure it's still doing its job properly.

  • Do We Close Above Ground Pools?

We typically only close pools with safety-style covers that fasten to a deck or concrete. Before closing, the pool must be properly balanced and free of debris. Many pool owners find that once they see how simple the closing process is, they feel confident doing it themselves.
